1. What is Physical AI?

For a long time, AI stayed confined to screens. Today, it's starting to interact directly with the physical world. A robot no longer just executes a programmed sequence: it can recognize its environment, adapt its movements, learn new tasks, collaborate with an operator and optimize its decisions using production data.

2. The signal from WAIC 2026

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2026, which wrapped up on July 20 in Shanghai, brought together more than 1,100 companies and showcased an impressive amount of advanced robotics, including more than 400 humanoid robots according to data reported by the AP news agency.

At the same time, TSMC plans an additional $100 billion investment in Arizona, driven in part by AI-related demand. A much broader value chain than models alone is taking shape: semiconductors → data centers → models → agents → robots → industrial systems.

3. Why this changes everything for industry

Industry 4.0 was mainly about connecting machines. The next step is letting them understand their environment. Tomorrow, a production floor may see collaborative robots, vision systems, AI agents, MES/ERP software and AI-assisted technicians all working together.

The goal will no longer simply be to automate – it will be to make systems able to adapt continuously.

4. A transposable signal: Bangladesh

This week, industry leaders and decision-makers in Bangladesh's textile sector are calling for faster adoption of AI, automation and advanced technologies to preserve the sector's competitiveness. This is directly transposable to West Africa.

Industry 4.0 doesn't have to start with a fully robotized factory – it can start with: measure → digitize → connect → analyze → automate.

5. And what about Africa?

This is probably the most important question. We often talk about generative AI – but are we actually preparing our industries to welcome this new generation of intelligent systems? Do we have enough trained engineers, specialized technicians, connected factories, experimentation platforms, and partnerships between companies and universities?

Africa has a unique opportunity: to build smart factories directly, tailored to its needs, without repeating every step other regions of the world have gone through.

6. What this means for engineers

The most sought-after skills will no longer be robotics, automation or AI taken separately – they will be the profiles able to understand all three at once, and to make data, machines, software and people talk to each other.
